Several concerns are fueling an increase in the number of people seeking handgun permits in Jackson County.
For some, calls for tighter restrictions in the wake of the massacre of 26 people, including 20 children, on Dec. 14 at Newtown, Conn., is causing them to seek permits to carry weapons.
For others, it’s a worry over personal safety.
“I think a lot of people are wanting to get a permit while they still can,” Jackson County Sheriff Michael Carothers said. “People are concerned this is a right or privilege they are going to have taken away from them.”
