Hearing previous generations through their hymns

I found it in our garage on a shelf of forgotten old books. It was a hymn book, a collection of songs to be sung in a church on Sunday mornings.

Like the other books on the shelf, it was old and musty. It was published in the early 1930s. Many churches today stopped using hymn books years ago, and the one I held in my hand was abandoned long before that.

As I randomly looked through the songs in it, I noticed several things.
