Bratwurst, a German treat and Oktoberfest favorite, is one snack readily available at a number of outlets during Oktoberfest, but there’s one activity that does bratwurst like no other.
Some like to eat brats with sauerkraut, some with mustard and ketchup and some just like a good old brat on a bun, but Oct. 6 night 16 guys — no gals this year — ate their brats in stacks at the annual Oktoberfest brat-eating competition.
Robert Becker, Oktoberfest co-chairman of entertainment, said the 5-year-old event has continued to be a crowd-pleaser.
“Everyone loves to eat brats,” Becker said. “We just like to see who can eat the most.”
Becker said the current record is 28 brats.
“I don’t know why but people love to see other people gorge themselves,” Becker said.
The event was free for participants, and the winner received a prize of $250 as well as $250 for a favorite charity. Competitors had 10 minutes to eat as many brats as possible. The brats were bunless, and no condiments were allowed. Contestants were allowed to wash their brats down with water.
