As a junior last fall at Brownstown Central, Jay Wehmiller didn’t get too much varsity action.

But after the Braves lost key players to graduation, this season’s seniors had to step up and fill positions. So this fall, Wehmiller is starting at slot and safety.

He hasn’t played slot since his first year of football, in sixth grade. Last winter, he was moved from wide receiver to slot.

“It was kind of tough because, being wideout, you didn’t have to learn very much,” Wehmiller said. “Now, you’ve got to learn everything. But you get to have a lot more fun. You get to do more.”

When he’s running the ball, Wehmiller said, “you’ve just got to look for the hole your linemen make for you and pop through it and hope nobody’s waiting on the other side.”
