Proposed bill aimed at evaluating efficiency, effects of tax breaks

An area lawmaker wants to ensure state and local tax breaks such as tax abatements and exemptions and other breaks are working as planned.

House Bill 1020 also could help spread the use of tax breaks that successfully produce new jobs at the least cost to other taxpayers, said state Rep. Eric Koch,

R-Bedford. His district includes part of Jackson County.

“My overall concern of watching economic development incentives over the years is that there was no real monitor,” Koch said. “So I thought it was time to set up a formal mechanism through which all tax deductions will be evaluated once every five years.”
