A proposed Jackson County Public Library budget for 2013, slightly larger than the current one, is under consideration.

The library board of trustees conducted a public hearing on the 2013 budget Tuesday evening.

The proposed operating budget would increase 1.61 percent from $2,078,641 to $2,112,109 from the current budget, library director Julia Aker said.

The library has proposed a tax rate of 9.49 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, although library administrator Mary Reed expects the rate to be reduced below the current rate of 8.28 cents once new assessed valuations are calculated by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.

Reed also expects the rate to go down because the library is not continuing its debt service rate of 0.0061 percent.
