Ephesians 5:22 is actually a specific application to women of a principle that was given to all of us.

Paul said, “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.”

This familiar verse is the specific application of the overarching principle that is found in the preceding verse (Ephesians 5:21), which we are all accountable to: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

All Jesus’ followers are called to live by the principle of mutual submission. We are all to submit ourselves to one another out of reverence for Christ. This is not about submitting out of reverence for each other. Each other is not always worthy of being submitted to. But this verse tells us to submit to others “out of reverence for Christ.”
