At age 10, Cortney VanLiew experienced the atmosphere of the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. It was her first time competing in the Indiana Swimming Age Group Championships.
“It was huge,” she said. “There were so many people, and I didn’t know anyone except for the three other girls I was with. So it was kind of chaotic. There is so much noise. You have to focus on what you’re swimming and think about it mentally, or else you get distracted and you don’t go fast at all.”
Now 14, VanLiew is getting her second chance to swim in the famed pool. She is one of eight Seymour boys and girls competing on Saturday and Sunday in the 2013 Age Group Championships.
