Max Spencer of rural Brownstown spent 20 years of his 78 serving his country as a member of the U.S. Navy.
During those years of service, the Bartholomew County native served on 10 different ships and spent a year on the U.S.S. Hull in Vietnam.
Spencer, who was born Jan. 31, 1935, also earned a Bronze Star during that tour of duty in Vietnam, which included time spent on the Mekong Delta in the southwestern part of Vietnam and in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of what was then North Vietnam.
