The following are the words of a Civil War officer Maj. R. L. Dabney (preacher and theologian on Gen. Stonewall Jackson’s staff). He emphasized the words in a sermon on “Special Providence.”
“Men, you need not be trying to dodge shot or shell or minie. Every one of these strikes just where the Lord permits it to strike, and nowhere else, and you are perfectly safe where the missiles of death fly thickest until Jehovah permits you to be stricken.”
A Maj. Nelson heard that sermon and thought he was a Christian but did not fully agree with Dabney.
