Lucas pushes bill on guns, schools

A Jackson County lawmaker is racing the clock to find a new home for his proposal to allow the concealment of a firearm in a vehicle on school property.

House Bill 1048, written by state Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, failed to receive a committee vote last week. Lucas said consideration of the bill failed in the wake of the Jan. 21 shooting that left one dead on the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette.

Lucas hopes to find a House bill in which to insert the proposal before Monday’s deadline for measures to clear the chamber en route to the state Senate. He also is keeping an eye out for a Senate bill that could accept the proposal.
