Man hurt in crash after falling asleep at wheel

A Lawrence County man was injured in a one-vehicle accident after falling asleep behind the wheel Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Steven S. Bassine, 49, of Bedford told Deputy Adam Nicholson of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department that he had been driving his blue 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier east on U.S. 50 when he apparently fell asleep.

The car left the north side of the road and struck a culvert head-on, causing the car to flip over at least twice, Nicholson said. The wreck was reported at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 11000 block of U.S. 50 West.
