Erin Nelson of Seymour doesn’t understand or care much about health care, Social Security, taxes or foreign policy.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t issues that concern the 11-year-old and reasons why she would or wouldn’t support candidates in this year’s election.

On Tuesday, Nelson and dozens of other girls let their voices be heard by casting their ballots in the She Votes mock election organized by Girls Inc. of Jackson County.

Afterward, they met and asked questions of a real woman in politics, Becky Schepman, a Republican running for re-election to the Jackson County Council. She is one of six candidates running for three at-large seats. The others are Democrats Jerry L. “J.L.” Brewer II, Rick Hirtzel and Steve Ritter, and Republicans Charles S. Murphy and Joseph “Joe” Bowman.
