Derek Patrick of Seymour generally drives to Florence, Ky., three times a week.

He says the 80-mile trip enables him to have the best of both worlds.

“I’m doing what I want to do, and I can still live in a small community where I can raise my kids and send them to a smaller school,” said Patrick, who works for DP Technology, a computer-aided manufacturing software firm.

The 31-year-old applications engineer regularly makes the hour-and-40-minute trip to Florence to provide support to Mazak Corp., a machine tool builder.

The drive gives him time to think out problems, he said, and it helps to have satellite radio.
