Neighbor hears gunfire, rushes to help officer

Jay Newberry knew something was wrong when he saw what he thought were two kids walking along State Road 39 in front of his home on the southeast side of the small community of Tampico on the evening of May 8.

The Aisin DriveTrain employee didn’t know, however, that he was just minutes away from putting his own life at risk by helping Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Officer Rick Meyer nab two men — one of whom police say had just shot Meyer in both shoulders.

“One of them had a trash bag and a suitcase, and the other one had a gasoline can,” Newberry, 35, said of two men, who later were identified as Isiah Tyler Roger, 18, of rural Brownstown, and Alexandrew Mullikin, 21, of Vernon.
