Despite a reduction of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and Pentagon plans for a reduced but more efficient military effort, the future of Camp Atterbury and its attendant promise for the area’s economy remain strong.
So positive that officials at the military installation north of Columbus are planning a $77 million expansion that will solidify the military’s ties to the area — an area of influence that stretches to Jackson and Jennings counties — and bring much-needed jobs and investment.
While other areas of the country that have had similar connections to military installations face uncertain prospects because of the anticipated reductions in force, our region is in a unique position to actually benefit from the process.
