An officer wounded in a shootout with an 18-year-old prison parolee barred from possessing a firearm has been released from the hospital.

Rick Meyer, a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy, planned to return to the scene of the incident Friday to talk with investigators about his role.

Meyer was shot twice — once in each shoulder — while investigating a report of suspicious people on State Road 39 just south of Tampico. That report was received at 7:06 p.m. Thursday, and the caller told dispatch there were what appeared to be suspicious juveniles walking along the highway with a trash bag and a gasoline can.
