Owl gymnasts place third in Olympian Classic

Greg Jones| For The Tribune Kelly Deppen of Seymour, works through her routine on the balance beam, during the Olympian Classic gymnastic Invitational held Saturday, in the Orange Pit.

What a difference one gymnast makes. The Seymour gymnastics team opened the season in late December against Columbus East without senior Kelly Deppen, and the Owls posted a score of 93.75 in losing to the Olympians.

But in their second time competing at Columbus East, the Owls had Deppen, and she finished second all-around to boost the team to a third-place showing in Saturday’s eight-team Olympian Classic with 102.95 points. The host Olympians won with a season-high 108.3, while New Palestine took second with 106.95.

Seymour started strong on vault, posting its highest score of the day (26.75), and finished strong on floor (26.675).
