A lot of cross-country runners don’t get the opportunity to advance to regional, and even less advance to semistate once in their career.

But Maria Garcia Dorantes has reached that goal twice during her career at Seymour High School. That included this fall.

“My sophomore year, we went to regional and semistate, and I was pretty excited to be going because that was my first year running cross-country, and I feel like it was a big thing to go on,” she said. “Cross-country brings a lot of girls or boys together, and it’s like a big family. We cheer for everyone so everyone keeps going. We give them motivation.”
