The No. 1 and No. 3 runners on the Seymour High School girls cross-country team missed a good portion of the meets this fall because of injuries.

So the Owls’ No. 2 runner, junior Madison Hays, took over the lead role on the team.

Hays battled through a bout of tendinitis and earned Hoosier Hills Conference honors, and then she led all Jackson County girls timewise in the postseason, during which the Owls made it to semistate.
