It took a noise from the crowd and a glance at the scoreboard for Seymour senior swimmer Alex Hawkins to realize what had just happened.
In Saturday’s Floyd Central Sectional at Highland Hills Middle School, Hawkins carried the adrenaline she had from helping the 200-yard freestyle relay team set a school record into winning the next race, the 100 backstroke, and breaking her own school record.
“I could hear my dad whistling, and I’m like, ‘What?’” Hawkins said. “Part of me was like, ‘Oh, I’m done now.’ When I touched the wall, my first thought honestly was ‘Oh, that’s the last time I’ll swim.’ Then I turned around and saw that 1 by my name, and I’m like, ‘No, I’m not.
