The top 10 divers entertained the crowd with the “Harlem Shake” on their way to compete in Saturday’s Floyd Central Sectional at Highland Hills Middle School.
Then, it was down to business, and Seymour senior Nick Hester said his heart was pounding. The crowd around him was silent, but he could hear commotion in the distance.
“I was trying to concentrate, and I do better when I just stop thinking,” Hester said. “So I just got ready and did what I practiced for months.”
After performing his final three dives of the competition, he finished with a personal-record 322.15 points to finish fourth and capture the final regional-qualifying spot. Junior teammate Chris Robinson also advances to Tuesday’s Bloomington North Regional after placing third with 357.05 points. Floyd Central’s Dylan Nichols won with a pool-record 429.10.
“I feel like I could have performed better, but under the conditions with being really nervous, I thought I did well,” Hester said.
