Volunteers are needed in Jackson County for a new support program to provide free transportation for local cancer patients to and from their treatments.

The Road to Recovery is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and works by establishing a list of residents willing to donate a little time and gas money to ensure that no one battling cancer has to miss an appointment.

It’s hard to imagine someone not being able to get to the cancer center or hospital for treatment, but it happens, said Karen Vandoski, media relations specialist with the cancer society.

Sometimes it’s because friends and family have to work and aren’t available to take them or the patient is feeling too sick to drive themselves. And in some cases, there is no immediate family nearby to rely on.
