Crothersville High School’s fall sports season recently came to an end, and Thursday night, the Tigers volleyball and cross-country teams were recognized during an awards program.
This year was a good year for Aaron Knieriem and the Tigers volleyball team, winning 17 games. They were led by a solid group of seniors, and one of them, Chandler Nehrt, received several awards.
She shared the passing award for having the best passing accuracy, and she also captured the hitting award, was named to the all-Southern Athletic Conference team and was voted as the SAC most outstanding player.
“This girl jumps like a deer,” Knieriem said of Nehrt. “She also has tremendous athletic ability.”
Senior Lauren Barnes received the Tiger Award and the serving award.
“She is someone who is excited to play the game,” Knieriem said. “She was also rock solid behind the service line and developed a jump-serve.”
Junior Sam Spall also received the passing award as she collected the most digs;
senior Whitney Wienhorst received the blocking award and joined Nehrt on the all-conference team, and senior Jessica Schmelzle earned the setting award.
“In blocking, Wienhorst got better and better every year,” Knieriem said. “In the offense that we run, the setter (Schmelzle) runs everything.”
The junior varsity team also was honored, and coach Zabrina Nicholson gave out three awards. Makenzie Long received the setting and
serving awards, while Morgan Muncy won the passing award.
