There are some athletes who like to talk to themselves to try to build themselves up mentally.

Jessica Waltrip said she does that for self-motivation when she is in the water practicing with the Seymour High School swim team, and that gets her ready for the meets.

“It’s one of those things where you talk to yourself when you swim and stuff, and some of my deepest thoughts come from when I am swimming,” she said. “A lot of it is mental. If there is a certain thing you have to work on, you have to think about your turns, and you have to think about your timing, and if you’re trying to break through that barrier, you just have to keep pushing, or your time will show.”
