A little more than five minutes into Monday’s Class A Switzerland County Regional championship match, Providence’s soccer team took a 1-0 lead.
Trinity Lutheran goalkeeper Luke Onken left the match at that point because of an injury, and his teammates battled hard for the remainder of the half to keep it a 1-0 game. Trinity then came out strong early in the second half, but Providence found a way to get the ball in the back of the net four times in the final 30 minutes of the match for a 5-0 win.
“It’s an unfortunate start to the game,” Cougars assistant coach Brandan Tabeling said of Providence’s Brent Hesse getting a loose ball in front of the goal and scoring at 34:42 of the first half.
