Report of suspicious people escalates fast

The sun was starting to set as Officer Rick Meyer answered a report called into the sheriff’s department at 7:06 p.m. Thursday about suspicious people in the Tampico area.

A dispatcher said two people were spotted with a gasoline can and a trash bag on a bridge, located in a low area near the farming community amid a slight curve as State Road 39 heads south toward Washington County.

Meyer, 44, was looking south as his 2014 Chevy Caprice cruiser pulled up toward the bridge about 7:15 p.m. He reported spotting a man, later identified as Alexandrew T. Mullikin, 21, of Vernon, sitting on the west side guardrail of the bridge.
