Area schools and street departments were on high alert Thursday in preparation for the season's first major winter storm.
Weather forecasts indicated the strong possibility of ice and heavy snow covering most of southern Indiana including Jackson County on Thursday night and today.
Steady rain started falling in Seymour at 1:15 p.m. after occasional drizzle throughout the morning.
Predictions of snow accumulation for the area ranged from five to eight inches, with amounts shifting as the weather system moved eastward.
