Chaz Mathis has advanced to the high school bowling semistate twice in the past three years, but he has never made it to the state finals.

The Trinity Lutheran High School senior hopes to break through this year.

He repeated as the sectional singles tournament champion Saturday at Kingpins Bowl in Seymour, and this Saturday he is among the Jackson County bowlers competing in the Beech Grove Regional at Expo Bowl.

“I’m just trying to get to state this year, my last year,” Mathis said.

The Southeastern Indiana Conference grew to 10 teams, so the competition throughout the year was tougher, Mathis said. There were 80 bowlers in the singles tournament, and Mathis finished at the top with games of 248, 202 and 195 for a 645 series.
