When Denver Stahl attended a program Monday at Seymour Middle School, he thought he was invited to hear Doug Thompson address students about the meaning of Veterans Day.

Thompson, who was in the National Guard from 1970 to 1976 and taught at SMS for 34 years, was an assistant baseball coach at Seymour High School when the Owls won the baseball state championship in 1988, and Stahl sat with other members of that team to listen to Thompson’s speech.

When Thompson finished speaking, he called Stahl up to the podium. Thompson presented Stahl with a gift bag, told him to reach into the bag, pull out a small gift-wrapped box and open it.
