Over and over, Seymour Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball coach Karen James steered the focus toward teamwork.

“They go into the locker room as a team, they come out of the locker room as a team, and they run their laps as a team,” James said. “I really, really preach you’ve got to play as a team, and they did a really good job. They really don’t care who gets it through the hoop, as long as it goes.”

After going 16-0 with head coach Sharon Wood and James as the assistant in 2011-12, there were high expectations for 2012-13. With James at the helm and the girls playing as a team once again, Seymour went 17-0. That included winning the Tri-County Tournament for the second straight year, and they also won the Lady Mac league in the summer for the second year in a row.
