Kelly Deppen and Alyssa Goen went 1-2 in all-around to boost Seymour’s gymnastics team to a 99.025-98.725 win Thursday at Franklin Central.
Deppen won vault (9.0), bars (9.45) and floor (9.0) and tied for second on beam (8.45) to finish with a 35.9. It was her first meet of the season.
Goen placed second on vault (8.95) and bars (8.45), third on floor (8.55) and fifth on beam (7.525) for a second-place all-around score of 33.475.
“Kelly has a new beam dismount that was huge tonight. That definitely helped in the scoring,” Seymour coach Angie Mellencamp said. “Alyssa Goen had a beautiful front handspring full vault.”
In only the team’s second meet of the season, Mellencamp still saw nerves.
“It’s early in the season,” she said. “The girls aren’t throwing all out yet. We’re kind of saving some stuff until the girls are landing it safe and clean. Sam Silver got some big skills in her floor routine, and she’s learning to control her nerves right now.
“We are beginning to work up to our capabilities. I don’t think tonight we showed completely what we’re capable of. But by the end of the season, we’ll have it.”
Seymour’s first home meet of the season is Thursday against Shelbyville.
