Seymour man loses life after wreck

A two-vehicle wreck south of Cortland left one Jackson County resident dead and another injured Thursday morning.

Lee S. Ertel, 63, of Seymour, died from his injuries at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, according to Coroner Roger Wheeler.

The wreck occurred about 7:46 a.m. at county roads 400E and 550N south of Cortland.

Wheeler said Ertel appeared to be suffering from internal bleeding before he was loaded into the helicopter.

Garrett Lee Fields, 18, of Seymour, who was driving the second vehicle involved in the wreck, also was flown to Methodist Hospital.

Wheeler, also a supervisor with Jackson County Emergency Medical Services, said Fields seemed to have a pelvic injury.
