Seymour native receives honorary degree



Seymour native Michael Simmons received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Indiana State University on Dec. 14 during winter commencement at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute.

Simmons is a 1964 graduate of what was then known as Indiana State College, according to a news release from the university. He began his career as a biology teacher at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis and taught data processing at Indiana Vocational Technical College, which is now Ivy Tech Community College.

After several years of teaching, Simmons went to work for IBM. He later served as a senior executive of American Fletcher National Bank in Indianapolis, Fidelity Investments, Bank of America, Bank of Boston and Security Capital Group. He then formed his own consulting firm and worked with several start-up companies as a board member or adviser.
