Sitting in fifth place with one rotation remaining in Friday night’s Columbus East Sectional, the chances of the Seymour gymnasts qualifying for regional weren’t looking good.
The 17th-ranked Owls trailed third-place Bloomington North by 1.625 points going into the final rotation, which had Seymour on the vault and the Cougars on the beam. But the Owls came through with a 26.85 and ended up outscoring Bloomington North 101.9-101.6 for the third and final qualifying spot.
“I’m not sure that we thought we had a shot going into the last event,” Seymour coach Angie Mellencamp said. “I spoke with the girls, and my assistant coach Olivia Coomer spoke with the girls, and we just said ‘Let’s throw what we’ve got. Just go all out. Go as hard as you can, and blast it.’
