It was a Friday night in November, right after Thanksgiving, and the stands at the brand new Seymour gymnasium were filling quickly. More than 8,000 people were coming to a basketball game in a town of 15,000.
The Seymour Owls, coming off a 25-1 season, were playing Bloomington in a rematch of a regional final the previous season. Both were ranked in the Top 10 in the state, back in the days before class basketball when the Top 10 meant something.
Reporters had come from across the area: Bob Williams, the legendary “Shooting the Stars” columnist for the Indianapolis Star, Russ Brown from the Louisville Courier-Journal. There were a lot of games across Indiana that night, but this was THE game.
