As the Jan. 8 opening of the primary filing period nears, the Jackson County sheriff’s race is poised to grab the spotlight as a familiar face stands ready to challenge incumbent Michael Carothers for the job.

The sheriff will get company in the May 6 Republican primary from someone who happens to know a lot about the job.

“I would have probably stayed around a while longer if I could have,” Jerry Hounshel said.
