Shoplifting call leads to felony drug arrest

Tribune staff reports

A woman was arrested Friday on charges of possession of methamphetamine as police investigated a report that another woman had shoplifted at the Walmart Supercenter in North Vernon.

Maria I. Thompson, 32, North Vernon, was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine, a class D felony, police said.

A second woman has pending charges of theft from Walmart, auto theft and possession of marijuana, police said. She was not yet arrested or identified by police.

Officers with North Vernon Police Department were called to Walmart after a woman ran from employees on foot into a nearby wooded area, police said.

After officers were unable to locate the woman, they were directed by store employees to the vehicle in which the woman arrived. Officers were given permission to search the vehicle by the owner, Thompson, and located a marijuana roach and a small amount of methamphetamine in the vehicle, police said.

According to a news release, Thompson told officers the other woman drove the vehicle without her permission.
