Steele appointed as senate judiciary chairman

Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long, R-Fort Wayne, appointed state Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, as chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary for the 118th General Assembly.

The 2013 legislative session will be Steele’s first time to lead the panel. Formerly, he served as chair of the Committee on Corrections, Civil & Criminal Matters.

Steele represents Senate District 44, which includes much of Jackson County, including Brownstown and Seymour. He practices law in Bedford.

Steele said his committee will consider legislation relating to Indiana’s courts, the legal professions, criminal and civil law and procedure, law enforcement, personal rights, estate and probate law and administrative code.

Long said he’s confident Steele’s experience makes him the perfect fit as chairman.

The 2013 legislative session ceremonially kicks off with Organization Day on Tuesday. Legislators will reconvene Jan. 7 and may work until April 29 to draft a two-year state budget and other new laws.
