Suspect in hit-run death to stay in jail for now

Columbus

A judge’s order will keep an Elizabethtown man in jail until at least Friday while the Columbus Police Department continues its investigation of a fatal hit-and-run incident early Sunday that left a Jackson County man dead.

Jacob Tolbert, 24, was arrested Sunday in connection with the death of Thomas

L. “Tommy” Brazzell, 27, of Vallonia. An initial 48-hour hold on Tolbert was set to expire at midnight Tuesday.

An additional 72-hour hold, requested by Bartholomew County Prosecutor Bill Nash, was signed at 5:20 p.m. Monday by  Circuit Judge Stephen Heimann. That action gives Nash up to three more days to make a decision on filing criminal charges against Tolbert.
