During a timeout with 14 seconds remaining, Trinity Lutheran girls basketball coach Mike Lang told his team to clear the lane and get the ball into the hands of Kyra Klosterman or Haley Couch for a drive to the basket.
The Cougars followed those instructions as Klosterman drove for a layup with five seconds remaining to give the Cougars a 55-53 win over Springs Valley on Tuesday night in a Class A Sectional 61 first-round game.
“Coach said take it to the basket and don’t stop until you get there,” said Klosterman, a senior. “Haley drove in first and kind of pulled the defense back and passed back to me, and then I was able to take it to the right and drove for the layup. It was awesome.”
The Blackhawks held a 48-40 lead with 4:50 left in the game, and Klosterman said, “We knew we couldn’t give up. We knew it was going to be a hard game, and it was going to be a fight to the finish. We knew we had to dig deeper, and that’s what we did.”
