Veterans remembered during holidays

Seventy-five veterans living in five nursing homes or assisted living centers in Jackson County will receive Christmas gifts this holiday thanks to a relatively new program.

The program is similar to one the local Sons of the Revolution chapter conducts each year for those living at the Veterans Affairs hospital, but on a smaller scale, organizer Wayne Gilbert said.

Gilbert, who is a veteran, said he came up with the idea of conducting a Christmas gift drive for veterans living at nursing homes and assisted living centers in Jackson County about three or four years ago.
