Thumbs up to Brownstown Town Council for adding an honorary name to Walnut Street in memory of Marine Lance Cpl. Hunter “H.D.” Hogan, who was killed in June while serving with the Marine Corps in Afghanistan. Hogan graduated from Brownstown Central High School in 2009. A section of Walnut Street from Main to Depot streets will carry the honorary name “H.D. Hogan Way.” Some proceeds from this weekend’s Jackson County Rodeo near Cortland will benefit the Hunter “H.D.” Hogan Memorial Rodeo Scholarship Fund.

Thumbs up to those dedicated folks known as the “chain gang” who will run up and down the sidelines of football games this season as Brownstown Central, Seymour and Trinity Lutheran high schools hit the gridiron. They play a valuable role in keeping area football games plugging along.

Thumbs up to Southern Indiana Center for Arts for serving as host of the annual Bustock series of concerts. A variety of children’s activities on its final night offered some fun to area families.

Thumbs up to donors who helped Trinity Lutheran High School realize its goal of expanding with a nearly 10,000-square-foot addition that focuses on the fine arts. The project added classrooms for drama, theology, Spanish, art and music. The project cost is $790,000.

Thumbs up to area residents who are choosing to become involved in their community schools by signing on the dotted line as candidates in this fall’s school board elections. Residents in Crothersville, Medora and Seymour school districts will elect school board trustees Nov. 6. Brownstown school trustees are appointed. The deadline to file a declaration of candidacy with Jackson County Clerk Amanda Cunningham Lowery is noon Aug. 24.

Thumbs up to the hundreds of student musicians who will perform in their high school marching bands. Seymour High School will field a band of 160 when the Marching Owls kick off the new football season tonight at Bulleit Stadium, where the Seymour Owls take on the Franklin Grizzly Cubs.
