Thumbs-up to area schools and veterans organizations for staging Veterans Day programs in honor of local residents who served our country in the U.S. military. Programs such as those at Emerson Elementary School, Trinity Lutheran High School, Sixth Grade Center and veterans lodges around the county offer fitting tributes to the men and women who served in the armed forces.

Thumbs-up to area residents — including our children — who continue to respond to the need for help putting food on the table for those in our community who struggle to feed themselves and their families. Individuals, students, businesses, service groups and churches make valuable donations to area food pantries such as Anchor House, Community Provisions, Human Services Inc. and others to help meet a continuing need.

Thumbs-up to the Hoosier Trails Council for bringing the Boys Scouts Camporee to the Jackson County fairgrounds. The program offered Scouts from 18 counties a chance to participate in a number of activities. About 600 scouts and volunteers, including some from Jackson County, participated.
