Alcohol might have played a role in a single-vehicle wreck early Sunday just south of Vernon that left a 49-year-old woman dead and a second person hospitalized in Louisville, police said.

Sherry Speer of North Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck on State Road 7 near County Road 50S, according to a news release from Trooper David Owsley with the Indiana State Police.

Speer’s boyfriend, James Brewner, 50, of North Vernon was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital by PHI air ambulance with “serious injuries,” Owsley reported.
