Tricia Maples describes her daughter’s recovery from a double lung transplant as watching a baby take her first steps.

Picking up a pair of socks off the ground, climbing stairs and brushing her teeth without stopping to catch her breath are considered successes these days for 20-year-old Erika Maples.

“You’re like, ‘Oh, look at her go,’” said Tricia Maples, a former Seymour resident. “It’s joyful. It puts a big smile on my face.”
