Wounded deputy shoots suspect

A wounded Jackson County deputy shot the man suspected of jumping from under a bridge and opening fire on him Wednesday night near Tampico.

Officer Rick Meyer, 46, of Seymour, and an unnamed suspect both were flown to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with what Lt. Andy Wayman described as non-life-threatening wounds.

Meyer was shot twice while responding to a report of two suspicious people just south of Tampico on State Road 39, Wayman said. Meyer managed to return fire and shot the suspect in the left arm, Wayman said.
