EVANSVILLE

Wrestlers at Saturday’s Evansville Reitz Semistate at Ford Center needed to win their first two bouts to earn a spot in the state finals.

For Seymour, junior 145-pounder Matthew Ruddick won a 10-8 decision against Washington’s Ritchie Osha in the first round, but he lost his second-round match. He then got to wrestle back for alternate, and he went 1-1 and wound up in sixth place.

But only the top four wrestlers in each weight class received a berth in the state finals, which are Friday and Saturday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Seymour also was represented by senior Adam Wolka in the 285-pound division, but he suffered a first-round loss to Center Grove’s Drew Ponder.

Ruddick finished the season with a 29-15 record, and on Saturday, he broke 100 takedowns for the season, setting a school record. Wolka ended with a record of 29-9.
