Schools placed on soft lockdown

A Facebook post by a Lawrence County man led some schools in Jackson County to implement a soft lockdown Wednesday afternoon.

The 26-year-old man reportedly made the post sometime Wednesday. The post was a quote from the 2004 film “Employee of the Month,” and local residents called police perceiving it as a threat in both Jackson and Lawrence counties, Brownstown Police Chief Tom Hanner said.

The man was a former Brownstown resident who hasn’t lived in the county seat for about four years, Hanner said.

Hanner said he received multiple calls from concerned residents about the post, prompting him to meet with Brownstown Central High School Resource Officer John Reichenbacker.

The two determined Brownstown schools needed to observe a soft lockdown as a precaution. Hanner said the schools were on lockdown for about an hour.

Seymour Community Schools, Crothersville Community Schools and Medora Community Schools also observed soft lockdowns, but they were later lifted.

Seymour police described the man’s post as “bogus” on the Seymour Police Department Facebook page.

Hanner said the Bedford Police Department will likely handle any investigation into the incident, if needed.
